The power of a wish was ignited in 1980 when seven-year-old Chris Greicius, diagnosed with leukemia, wished to become a police officer.

Thanks to the rallying support of his community, Chris received an official uniform and badge, welcoming him as the newest member of his local unit and inviting him to help with traffic stops. His favourite part was when officers took him on a ride above the city in a helicopter.

“He was the happiest I’ve ever seen him,” his mom Linda shared. “He came alive again, transforming into a child full of hope, joy and wonder. For that day, my son forgot about his physicians, the hospital stays, and even his pain. I can’t begin to express the happiness I felt in my heart, and because of this, I continue to remember Chris’ wish more than I remember his illness.”

Chris’ wish inspired a group of volunteers from the community to brainstorm how they can replicate this experience for other children and their families, recognized now as the very start of Make-A-Wish.  Like Chris, many qualified children who embark on the wish journey wish to be or meet their local heroes.
